The Saturday market at Riccarton House is a really relaxing event with lots of home-made and organic food to sample. The experience is enhanced by buskers and beautiful spring sunshine.
The botanical gardens are just coming into bloom. The significance of the gardens to locals is highlighted in the museum where an interactive display presents personal stories of how the gardens have provided a source of stability when many other monuments were destroyed in the earthquakes. One woman explained that there were few places left that enabled her to share memories of her own childhood with her children, so the botanical gardens was important in that regard. Other people said it provided a place of peaceful reflection when everything else had been destroyed. I can see what they mean.
